The electric vehicle market explodes in Quebec: what you need to know
Quebec continues to lead the way in the electrification of transportation. In 2024, more than 103,000 electric cars were sold in the province - a meteoric rise of almost 86% on the previous year. This surge takes EVs' market share to 22.4%, a clear advance compared with 13.5% in 2023.
In other words, one in five new cars sold here is electric.
Which models dominate Quebec roads?
According to figures published by the AVÉQ, Quebec consumers opt for a wide variety of models. Here are the most successful in 2024:
- Tesla Model Y - 10,995 units
- Chevrolet Equinox EV - 8,634 units
- Hyundai IONIQ 5 - 7,999 units
- Hyundai Kona EV - 6,724 units
- Tesla Model 3 - 6,212 units
- Volkswagen ID.4 - 6,119 units
- Ford Mustang Mach-E - 5,062 units
The Korean brands (Hyundai and Kia) continue to gain ground, as consumers seem to appreciate their good value for money and the reliability of their models.
Tesla: the fall after the peak?
Despite impressive figures for 2024, Tesla is having a difficult start to 2025. Its sales in Quebec fell off sharply in the first quarter: fewer than 530 registrations, compared with almost 4,000 for the same period last year.
The reasons? Several factors are intertwined:
- The end of certain subsidy programs that made Tesla more affordable.
- Rising tariffs, which have a direct impact on the price of vehicles imported from the USA.
- And, of course, the brand's image, which is suffering from the controversies surrounding Elon Musk, which is putting off some buyers.
The Model Y and Model 3, which once topped the charts, are the hardest hit.
Asian brands conquer the market
While Tesla is retreating, other players are making headway. Asian brands, particularly Korean and Chinese, are gaining ground.
Public favorites
Hyundai and Kia are still the safe bet. Their IONIQ 5, Kona EV and EV6 models are hailed for their range, comfort, on-board technology - and prices that are often more affordable than those of American brands.
Newcomers attracting attention
The Quebec market is also beginning to see emerging brands:
- Chinese electric giantBYD offers affordable, well-designed vehicles.
- VinFast, a Vietnamese manufacturer, is arousing curiosity with its VF 8 model, a bold-looking all-electric SUV.
These newcomers offer a concrete alternative for those looking to get off the beaten track - and save money.
